SVG in Blender: Import Paths or an Extruded GLB / OBJ
There are two useful ways to work with SVG in Blender: import vector paths directly when you want curve control, or import an extruded GLB or OBJ from this editor when you want a mesh. Choose the route before adjusting scale and materials.

Choose a route for SVG in Blender
Direct import preserves a path-based starting point. Browser extrusion gives you a prepared mesh and a quick depth preview. Neither route reconstructs a complete object from a photograph.
| Input | Best starting point | Check after import |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | Curve editing and extrusion in Blender | Path support, fill, orientation, and size |
| GLB | An extruded mesh with supported materials | Material appearance, transforms, and dimensions |
| OBJ | A geometry-focused mesh handoff | Scale and newly assigned materials; no MTL is supplied |
This SVG in Blender guide references the Blender 4.5 LTS manual. Menu availability can differ by version or enabled extensions. The steps are documentation-based, not a claim of an import test on your installation.
Import SVG in Blender as paths
- Prepare closed, filled paths. Outline text and strokes before exporting the vector file.
- In Blender, choose File → Import → Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg).
- If the entry is missing, check Preferences and the SVG import add-on or extension for your Blender version.
- Select the imported objects in the Outliner and frame the selection. Inspect the silhouette before adding depth.
The documented SVG importer supports path geometry, not every SVG visual feature. To use SVG in Blender reliably, simplify filters, masks, embedded images, and other unsupported effects first.
Adjust curve fill and extrusion in Blender as needed, then convert to a mesh only when your next operation requires it. Keep a copy of the curves so you can revise the outline.
Use an extruded GLB for SVG in Blender
Open the SVG to GLB converter, load the badge sample, and choose depth and a simple material. Download GLB, then use File → Import → glTF 2.0 in Blender.
This route to SVG in Blender produces a mesh, not editable SVG curves. The export includes supported material data but not the preview's complete scene lighting, camera, background, or animation track. Create lighting in Blender before judging the final appearance.
If a material differs, try a plain color before a complex texture. Compare geometry and shading separately instead of assuming that a darker render means the model failed.
Use OBJ when you only need the mesh
For another route to SVG in Blender, use the OBJ converter, expand Other formats, and download OBJ. Import it through Blender's Wavefront OBJ entry.
This site's OBJ export is a single geometry file. It does not include an MTL companion or a texture package, so assign materials after import. Choose GLB if supported material transfer is important to your SVG in Blender workflow.
Inspect SVG in Blender before using it
Check the central opening, front and back faces, side walls, object orientation, and disconnected pieces. Set the intended dimensions explicitly; the browser editor normalizes the preview size and does not promise that an SVG width in millimeters survives export.
Before using SVG in Blender for modifiers or printing, review object transforms and apply scale when appropriate for that operation. Do not blindly merge every vertex: nearby points may define an intentional hole or gap.
For printing, export the inspected result and check it again in the slicer. For web delivery, test the model in the actual viewer. Completing an SVG in Blender import only establishes that Blender can read the file.

These official references describe the import formats used for SVG in Blender: SVG path importer, glTF 2.0, and Wavefront OBJ. Consult your installed version's documentation if the menus differ.
Common questions
Should I import SVG in Blender directly or use GLB?
Use direct SVG import for path and curve editing. Use GLB when you want the browser editor's extruded mesh and supported material data as a starting point.
Does GLB include the preview animation?
No. This editor exports a static model with the current transforms. It does not include the preview animation as a GLB animation track.
Why does my OBJ have no material?
This site's OBJ download does not include an MTL file or texture bundle. Assign a material in Blender or use GLB for supported material transfer.
